Lumbar Disc Arthoplasty

Artificial disc replacement is a unique surgical procedure for relieving back pain. During this procedure, a disc replacement substitutes for an intervertebral disc in the spine. The surgery is meant to restore motion to the spine by replacing the degenerated disc. Disc arthoplasty is primarily considered for patients with isolated degenerative disc disease rather than for patients with spinal factures, instability, neurological compression or multiple level degenerative disc disease.

“This is typically going to be done in younger patients… The disc replacement is really only changing the disk so in that regard, if someone already has arthritis they are not a very good candidate…” – Dr. Beard
